Paint Protection Film FAQ

Does PPF yellow over time?

Modern premium PPF brands have largely solved the yellowing problem, but it depends entirely on the film quality and age of the product.

Current-generation films (2018+):

  • Premium films from XPEL, 3M, SunTek, and LLumar use advanced formulations with UV stabilizers that resist yellowing for the life of the warranty (typically 10 years)
  • These films maintain optical clarity and do not noticeably yellow under normal conditions
  • All major brands warrant against yellowing as part of their standard warranty
Older or budget films:
  • Films manufactured before ~2015 used formulations more prone to UV-induced yellowing
  • Budget or off-brand films may still use older chemistry and can yellow within 1-3 years
  • Films without UV-stabilized adhesive layers are more susceptible
Factors that accelerate yellowing:
  • Extended UV exposure without garage storage
  • Extreme heat climates (desert Southwest, Gulf Coast)
  • Chemical contamination from industrial fallout
  • Poor-quality adhesive breaking down over time
How to avoid yellowing:
  • Choose a current-generation film from a major manufacturer
  • Verify the installer is using genuine, authorized product (not gray-market film)
  • Maintain the film with proper washing and avoid harsh chemicals
  • If yellowing occurs under warranty, the manufacturer will replace the affected panels at no cost
If you have an older vehicle with yellowed PPF, removal and replacement with modern film is straightforward. Professional removal typically costs $400-800 for partial coverage.
